In Empire, each musket unit has to wait for the slowest soldier to finish loading before commencing fire, which led to some ridiculous situations when only 2-5 men could fire in the unit's arc and the others had to wait with loaded weapons. "Volley fire" was only a doctrine with the musket drill, where soldiers were trained specifically "by the numbers" to load and fire on command for maximum effect.Īs far as TW games go, I think FOTS (and to a lesser extent, Napoleon) gets the "fire at will" rhythm right. The ineffectiveness of volley fire probably had more to do with lack of precise coordination than desired effect. I don't think the idea of "feeling safe" is in the heads of the people being shot at. You end up with the sporadic shower of arrows as archers take longer to load, replenish arrows, adjust their mark and so on. I'd imagine that the opening shots would probably be done closely together, and that most archers would follow a similar rhythm in shooting and loading, but exact timing was not intentional. I think it's more that the way most people visualise volley fire is influenced by cinema and games, where everything is synchronised and archers only shot in sychronised volleys.
